What we do

We're having Fun with Fabrics!

We love them. We're obsessed with the patterns, the colours, the texture, and overall the patina of used & naturally aged materials.

Fabrics are all around us & we constantly keep our eyes open and source new exciting materials of all kind from all places.

-

To display the beauty & make use of these precious textiles, we developed different products;

from top hats and bags to all kinds of accessories, caps, backpacks, and now also clothes.

Each piece we create is something we love and would wear ourselves.

-

Every day we strive to make the best customised hats, caps, bags, backpacks and accessories for people around the world. Captn-Crop was founded in 2007 by Moritz Wolfgruber when he created his own technique of making hats. Over the years it evolved into much, much more!

We started creating hats because we felt the need for handcrafted products that are as unique as the people who wear them.

Captn Crop values design, functionality and quality above all. We love to continuously experiment and investigate on new materials, styles or techniques.

But most important: WE DO IT. WE DO IT OURSELF.

Only that way we can put all our love and attention in every product we produce.

How we do it

Since we started in 2007 with our own technique of making hats we developed and learned to make many different products; from hats & caps to accessories, bags and now clothes.

We make them ourself and wear them ourself; and little by little we improve them & make them better until we're completely satisfied.

-

That way we develop our products in an organic way.

We're keeping our designs simple and classic, once because we like them simple and want to keep the focus on the displayed fabrics, but also to be able to produce them by ourself in highest quality & fast enough to offer them to you for reasonable prices.

-

But it all starts with sourcing materials. We use all kind of fabrics from all over the world. Wherever we are, we keep an eye open for special material we could use or reuse for our products. We strive to use as much as possible of what is available around us. From old carpets found in Marocco, to curtains of abandoned hotels or an old sail found in the mud on a beach.

-

At Captn Crop you can choose from either ready made single pieces, or fully customise your own item. In fabric, style or size.

Fabrics are what inspires us.

The most inspiring and exciting materials are the ones aged naturally by  time, and life. Curtains or umbrellas bleached out by sun, worn off clothes, tarpaulins with scars and holes, flour-bags from the last century or once fashionable bedsheets from the last decades .

They transport history and traces of time.

& you can never buy materials like this in fabric shops.

-
But we don't only use recycled materials for aesthetic reasons. In a time like this when humanity and our planet faces serious danger through industrial pollution and mass production we're happy to keep our ecological footprint as small as possible.

Our approach to sustainability is:

  1. Upcycling - using old materials- less landfill

  2. Quality - better products - make it last and loved

  3. On demand production - custom work prevents overproduction

  4. Small batch production- unique pieces instead of mass production

  5. Fixing & repair service - we take care of our products, a life long.

Our Logo

“What does the money machine eat? It eats youth, spontaneity, life, beauty and above all it eats creativity. It eats quality and shits out quantity.”

- William S. Burroughs -

Facing a capitalistic world of mass production and alienated work conditions we felt the need for unique products;

products crafted for their beauty and functionality and not only for making money and adding value. Being able to identify oneself with your work and what you do, is most important for us.

We want to break free from the money machine and it's destructiveness as good as we can and still be able to live from what we love to do. Creating.

That's why we chose this logo:

The scratches of a prisoner who's counting the days to be free.

-

For us these scratches symbolize resistance, obsession, passion & dedication and of course lust & love for life itself.

Store & Studio

Our shop and studio is based in Neukölln

Berlin, where every Captn Crop item is made.

We moved in Reuterstr. 52 in December 2009 and since that day a lot happened inside & outside.

-

We constantly adjust and rebuild our studio to

create a striking display as well as a spacious working area.

-

We built the interior of our workshop entirely from wood and found materials.

The outside is all green & covered with plants.

In 2020 a neighbours apartment burned down and we had to take it all down. A couple of months later though we were able build it up again and plant new vines.

-

If you happen to be in Berlin, pop by and say Hello!

You can watch us crafting while trying on hats or choosing the fabrics for your customised piece!
